Les Miserables, a novel by Victor Hugo, is considered one of the most successful and prominent novels of the 19th century.  There are numerous film adaptations (non-musical) and, of course the musical by Claude-Michel Schoenberg and Alain Boubil.  The story and characters are timeless.  The overarching theme of redemption is powerful, and speaks of hope, love, and forgiveness.  The novel is extremely detailed and involved, with complex back stories and sub plots.  The musical, incredibly, has a remarkable depth of character development and manages to transverse nearly all of the significant plot points from the novel.

This Wikipedia page provides a decent plot summary and character outline.  The novel is available for free from digital sources like Apple Books store, since it is now in the public domain.
